How to Calculate Implied Probability from Betting Odds

Odds and probability

In brief: Implied probability equals 1 divided by decimal odds, multiplied by 100.

What it means

Implied probability equals 1 divided by decimal odds, multiplied by 100.

Divide one by decimal odds, then multiply by 100 to get the implied percentage.

A worked example

Decimal odds 4.0 imply 25%; 2.5 imply 40%; 10.0 imply 10%.

At decimal 2.5, the implied chance is 40%. At decimal 6.0, it is about 16.67%. These are price-implied probabilities, not independently verified win chances.

How to check the numbers

Convert every quote into decimal odds and an implied probability before comparing prices. Use the price available when the bet could actually be placed, not a later historical quote.

Common mistakes and limitations

Implied probability includes market pricing effects and does not necessarily equal the true chance.

A mathematical edge depends on the quality of the probability estimate; small errors in estimated chance can reverse an apparent advantage.

Worked fractional and decimal conversions

At 3/1, decimal odds are 4.0 and implied probability is 1 ÷ 4 = 25%. At 6/4, decimal odds are 2.5 and implied probability is 1 ÷ 2.5 = 40%. At 1/2, decimal odds are 1.5 and implied probability is 66.67%.

Practical checks and limitations

The implied probabilities of every runner in a bookmaker market typically sum to more than 100% because of overround. Do not treat a single quoted price as an unbiased estimate of a horse’s true chance.

How this connects to racing probability

Understanding how to calculate implied probability from betting odds is one part of reading a race or evaluating a market. A sensible assessment also considers the race conditions, the available price and the uncertainty around any prediction.
