What Does BF Mean on a Horse Racing Form Guide?
Betting termsIn brief: BF means Beaten Favourite: the horse started favourite on its previous relevant run but did not win.
What it means
BF means Beaten Favourite: the horse started favourite on its previous relevant run but did not win.
BF marks a beaten favourite on a prior run; it does not by itself explain why that horse lost.
A worked example
A form entry showing 3BF indicates a third-place finish as the beaten favourite in that run.
Check whether the favourite met unsuitable ground, distance or pace rather than assuming the BF flag predicts another defeat.
How to check the bet
Read the bookmaker or pool operator’s settlement rules, check whether the price is fixed or variable, and verify the total amount staked. Similar-looking bet names can cover different combinations.
Common mistakes and limitations
BF describes a past market expectation, not proof that the horse was unlucky or will win next time.
Bet structures alter how many outcomes must happen, but multiplying selections does not create an advantage by itself.
How this connects to racing probability

A sensible assessment also considers the race conditions, the available price and the uncertainty around any prediction. To judge predictions fairly, compare published performance and ROI with settled racing results. No system can guarantee winners, and some days produce no Qualified Races.
